In Memory of Ruben Acosta

 

 

 

 

 

An enterprising and successful attorney, Ruben was co-managing partner and co-founder of Williams Acosta PLLC in Detroit. As a business counselor and litigator, Mr. Acosta counseled and represented clients in a broad array of complex commercial and litigation matters and disputes.

Born in Cuba and fluent in Spanish, Ruben’s professional responsibilities included representing Latin American companies and citizens involved in transnational commercial disputes in the United States and abroad.

As a litigator, Ruben Acosta successfully prosecuted and defended cases in jury and bench trials and through summary judgment motion practice. Going beyond traditional trial practice, Ruben represented clients in commercial disputes using alternative dispute resolution testimony to his legal expertise, Ruben practiced before federal and state trial courts and administrative tribunals, as well as appellate courts, including the Michigan Supreme Court, the Michigan Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.

A prominent and able leader in Hispanic civic affairs, Ruben Acosta served as the chairman of the 2006 United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) Legislative Conference where he worked with congressional and White House representatives to shape policy on comprehensive immigration reform. Ruben was a long tenured member of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber Board of Directors (MHCC) and also served as the Chamber’s General Counsel. He also represented the interests of the State of Michigan as a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Ruben also volunteered his time to human services organizations that served the Latino community. He served with distinction as Board President of Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development (LASED) and as legal counsel to SER Metro Detroit and Mexicantown Community Development Corporation. He also encouraged Latino musical talent through his service on the Board of Directors of the Sphinx organization.

Ruben graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan in 1982 and cum laude from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law in 1988.
